High-performance sails for offshore racing

Performance, reliability, and precision for offshore programs

Offshore racing places unique demands on sailmaking. Sails must be high-performance, reliable, and capable of maintaining their shape in extreme conditions, sometimes for several thousand miles. At Axe Sail, we support skippers and technical teams in the design and optimization of their offshore racing sails, in partnership with Quantum Sails, a global benchmark for innovation and performance.

Each project is approached specifically, depending on the boat, the program, and the sporting objectives. Whether for offshore regattas in IRC, Mini 6.50 circuits, or more demanding projects in Class40 or IMOCA, the sails are designed to meet real-world sailing constraints.

Design based on real-world performance

Quantum sails dedicated to offshore racing are developed using advanced modeling tools to precisely analyze loads and deformations.

Membranes are constructed with fibers oriented along load lines, allowing for:

  • precise control of the aerodynamic profile

  • reduced deformation over time

  • significant weight savings

  • better stability in offshore conditions

This design precision is essential for maintaining consistent performance over time, even in demanding conditions.

Sails adapted to every offshore program

Each class and offshore racing program presents specific constraints. Axe Sail adapts sail design based on these requirements.

  • In IRC, the goal is to find the best compromise between pure performance and rating optimization. Sails are designed to maximize the boat’s potential while respecting measurement constraints.
  • On Mini 6.50s, priority is given to lightness, versatility, and the ability to perform single-handedly. Sails must be easy to handle while remaining effective across a wide range of conditions.
  • In Class40, sails must combine power, robustness, and durability. As these boats are subject to demanding sailing, material strength and shape stability are essential.
  • On IMOCA projects, requirements are even higher. Sails must be optimized for very fast boats, capable of sailing in extreme conditions.

Design precision, material choice, and technical support are decisive for the overall performance of the project.

Comprehensive technical support

Beyond manufacturing, we support skippers and teams throughout their project:

  • defining the sail inventory adapted to the program

  • choice of materials and structures

  • tuning optimization

  • performance monitoring and adjustments

  • maintenance and repairs

Thanks to the Quantum Sails global network, sailors benefit from technical support in major racing ports, both in Europe and internationally. This network ensures reliable and responsive follow-up, which is essential for offshore programs.
